How to Choose a Balance Bike

When is it best to buy a balance bike for a child? What size to choose? What parameters should it fulfil and what to pay attention to? You will find out all of these in the following article.

How to choose the scooter size?

Every child is an original and you can hardly choose the right size of a balance bike based on age alone. Let us take a look at how to measure your offspring, in order to see, if it has grown up enough for a balance bike, or has outgrown it, on the contrary.

It can best be measured in the following way:

Balance bikes are generally designed for children from 18 months  to about 4.5 years. However, the parameter that plays the most important role in choosing a balance bike is the length of the inside of the child's legs. It can be measured best as follows:

  1. Ask your child to stand at the wall, preferable barefoot or only with socks, its back to the wall

  2. Place a smaller book between its legs

  3. Ask the child to step aside a little and measure the distance between the back of the book and the floor

Compare the obtained figure with the minimum and the maximum height of the seat of the given balance bike. If the length of the inner side of the leg is smaller than the minimum height of the seat of the balance bike  – the child is still too small for a balance bike.

If the measured distance significantly exceeds the maximum set height, it will be better to look for a smaller bicycle or a scooter.

The most important parameters that you should focus on when selecting a balance bike

Adjustable height of seat and handlebars

Adjustable height of seat and handlebars, which will ensure that the balance bike lasts the children as long as possible. In the case of Yedoo balance bikes, which have the seat post put in under a specific angle, raising the seat and handlebar also increases the space for the rider. The rider will have enough space and comfort, despite having outgrown the shoes, trousers and shirt.

Brakes with a light run and a junior lever

Brakes with a light run and a junior lever, the size of which corresponds to children's small hands and which will enable children to halt quickly and safely.

Inflatable wheels

Inflatable wheels that will cushion and safely overcome bumps in the terrain.

Stoppers against handlebar oversteer

Stoppers against handlebar oversteer, which delimit a safe angle for turning. Thanks to them, the front wheel will never get into a position that would suddenly block the ride and cause the balance bike to slide, or in a worse case the handlebar to be pushed against the belly.

Reflective elements

Reflective elements, which should be placed at the front as well as on the side of the balance bike, so as to ensure good visibility of the child from any angle and in any weather.

Ergonomic handlebar

Ergonomic handlebar with widened and reinforced ends that fit well into the hand and ensure that the child's hands do not slip from the handlebar when riding or when falling.

The weight of the balance bike

The weight of the balance bike, which should be as low as possible, so the child would be able to lift the balance bike, carry it a little or push it uphill.

Certification of safety and quality

Certification of safety and quality - to be sure that balance bikes are safe, you should require certification that confirms a product meets the required standards. In the case of balance bikes, these are the standards marked ČSN EN 71-1, ČSN EN 71-3.

What do parents themselves appreciate about the Yedoo balance bikes?

“The balance bike is really gorgeous.”

“My husband assembled and adjusted it without any problems.”

“Visibly quality workmanship.”

“Sturdy, no plastic.”

“The advantage is that my son does not rub his legs against the rear wheel at all. It is great that the balance bike grows with the child and he can thus have it for rather a long time.”

“After a careful survey the best balance bike on the market.”

“The inflatable wheels handle the terrain well.”

“The advantage is I have found no disadvantage yet.”

Hi, Is the yootoo available in New Zealand? I can not find it anywhere. Thanks

  • Yedoo  |  27. 2. 2023

Dear Eileen, We recommend Yedoo balance bikes until the child is about five years old, but since children vary greatly in height, it is difficult to say. The best choice would be the YouToo bike with an adjustable seat height of 29 - 43 cm. Try to measure the length of the inside of your child's legs, it shall help you to estimate. Best wishes Vendula and the whole Yedoo team

Hello would any of your bikes be suitable for a 6 year old?

  • Yedoo  |  1. 2. 2021

Hello Nadia, 44" is probably too much for all our models. YooToo lasts the longest due to the dual rear fork. But still, it might fit now but would only last a few weeks. What about a scooter? Mau, Tidit or One would fit great. https://www.yedoo.eu/en/product-category/scooters-for-kids-7XGthZ On behalf of Yedoo Irena

Hello, would any of your bikes fit a child who is 44" with an 18" inseam? Thanks.

  • Yedoo  |  4. 1. 2021

Hello Rob, all the balance bikes fit the same size (except for YooToo which has two position rear fork and lasts a bit longer). The difference between OneToo and TooToo is in the quality of components, OneToo is a basic balance bike, TooToo better equiped. It has the reflective dots on the tyres, better brake levers and the steering limiters mentioned in the article. On behalf of Yedoo Irena

Hello, I need a balance bike for my 2 year old son and am looking at the tootoo and onetoo, which one would be best for him and last the longest? I assumed he tootoo would be bigger but it seems the onetoo is bigger but the description for the onetoo says it's a good first bike, so should? I'm a bit confused. Thank you

How to Choose a Scooter for Children

1. 10. 2019 | Vendula Kosíková

Every child is different, some will master scootering immediately, others will take some time to gain the necessary confidence. If the scooter is light enough, though, its size corresponds to the child's age and the footboard height does not burden the supporting leg excessively, then nothing stands in the way of children enjoying the pleasures that riding a scooter brings.
